Reach 3-4 Things to Know

Reach 3rd--- 2016-2017
Things to know
Mrs. Gray's Class- This part of my blog will be up all year for you to read.
Each blog will have the week's lessons, schedule for upcoming tests, and any bulletin board news you need to know. Please check this daily because things can be added, changed, or taken away completely. Flexibility is the key to us working together so well! :)

**Please check the Take Home Folder everyday! If there are papers in the folder, please review the work for that day and keep them unless the paper specifically has instruction to be returned to school. There will be some things that say "keep at home".

Spelling- Words will come home on Friday in the take home folder that have been copied by your child. Check the "Take Home Folder" for new words and verse.
Please begin studying these words. They will have a test on Thursday of each week.
They will be expected to write the words and verse each week. Cursive handwriting will be worked on during the week with Spelling words but they are not expected to do their test in Cursive until after Christmas. :) Keep working at home on Cursive as much as possible.
Bible verse: Verse will be given on Friday. They are expected to write the verse on their
Spelling test by memory on Thursday's Spelling test. Orally reciting the verse is not expected, but it would be great to have it memorized.
Reading- We have F&F units that we do throughout the year. They consist of Sequencing of Events, Main Idea/Supporting Details, Comparing and Contrasting, Character, Summarizing, Author's Purpose, etc. They will work in their Specs Logs. This curriculum is done in a small group setting with independent work following. The students will receive instructions for F&F units before they begin. They will work on this unit with a book to read each day for approximately 6 weeks. (Some units take longer) They will have the vocabulary, the process questions, and the visual tool 6 weeks in advance.  Please make sure they don't wait until the week of the test to start studying. It is a lot of information. We go over and over it everyday. At the end of each unit, they will have 3 tests. These tests are Vocabulary, Skills Knowledge, and Performance. They are  three separate grades including an AR TEST grade on the book we read together.  They will be expected to write and use each of these areas.  This will be clearer when you see the Unit. It will be in a clear plastic protector. They will have two copies of this information. One copy will be at school and one is to be left at home for your convenience to study throughout the Unit time. I will be glad to show you all of it on parent night! :)

Math- We do repetitious facts each day in our morning folder to reinforce their math skills.
This year we will start immediately with learning the multiplication facts 0-12. Please study these as much as you can. Ideally, you need to study a few minutes each night on the fact family/families we are reviewing that week along with others we have already covered.  We will be working on various things in our  SAXON Math, but always work on facts no matter what we are covering. Thanks for your support! There are several reinforcing skills on the computer like the Xtra Math website to help master skills. These can also be done at home with your passwords. I will send all passwords home as soon as we are off the ground and running. We have added IXL Math to the reinforcement skills tasks. IXL can be done at home. also. Please choose skills that your child needs help with the most! :) More info on this later.

Social Studies and Science --This will be done with Mrs. Wheeler  and accommodated by us in the REACH room if needed. We want them to have an opportunity to show growth with their independence. Study guides will be sent home in advance for studying and test dates will be given in advance for ample study time. Mrs. Wheeler  will give me the study guides earlier and I have the students copy the correct notes so when they get to her room, they are able to listen and follow along to avoid them copying the whole time and not listening. This has worked well so far and seems to be very helpful to the students so they are not frustrated trying to keep up.

Bible- Mrs. Brassell comes to the homeroom classroom for Bible class. They have a folder marked BIBLE and will bring any notes for tests etc. home to be studied. Test dates will be given in plenty of time for ample studying.

Math-We will be teaching SAXON MATH again this year. Please continue to study multiplication facts each night. These need to be mastered now! If you know your child is still having trouble with their facts, please make every effort to practice these each night.

Social Studies and Science- This will be handled just like last year, but with Mrs. Morris. The students big lesson in SS is the geographical location of the states and also their capitals. You can start learning them now! :) I will accommodate as needed. I will post test dates for ample study time. Your child will copy any assignments they may have for Mrs. Morris each morning before they come to my class. They have SS/Sci in the afternoon just like last year. We have labelled a folder for each student so they can keep up with any handouts or notes she may give them. Again, this is one of those things that can't be studied the night before. Tests and projects will be assigned with ample time to complete. Remember these two subjects are without my direct accommodations, but Mrs. Morris does an excellent job accommodating in her room. We communicate extremely well with things going on in SS/Sci to assure they don't miss anything. There is more responsibility required so hang tough and push your child to be more independent. We will work on our end to make sure this is successful, but we do want them to grow independently as much as possible.  If you have any questions about
SS/Sci, let either of us know and we will do what we can to make things clear.

Bible- Mrs. Brassell will come to the classroom as she did last year. _Mrs. Morris will monitor this also. I will accommodate as needed. I will post test dates for ample study time.
